Adopting

Many people will adopt a dog in a few days and they will send it back later. Most of the cases are because the dogs will disrupt the house or they will annoy the neighbors. But volunteers can’t distract their choices and the adoption is gratis. It causes many problems like the dogs keep being returned, and it is actually bad to the dogs, including their body and mental health, tolerance, and the trust in humans.

Repeated adoptions and returns cause long-term stress for dogs. This cycle breaks their trust and makes them more anxious. Every time a dog is sent back, finding them a home becomes even harder.

Some of the volunteers will want to adopt too, but they need to assess their abilities themselves, see if they have enough time, enough money, enough energy… Some volunteers will adopt the stray dog that has less resources, then they will see where they can drop the dog off along the way. This is not in the volunteers’ working scope, they did it because of love and compassion, so it actually brings heavy burden to the volunteers. When volunteers spend time at an animal shelter, they often interact with the dogs by walking them, playing with them, or simply keeping them company. After spending time together again and again, it is very easy for volunteers to develop feelings for the dogs and care about them a lot. Because of this, volunteers really hope that the dogs can be adopted by kind and responsible people who will take good care of them.

Because they care so much, volunteers' biggest wish is to see these dogs go to responsible, loving homes. They just want to know their friends are finally in good hands.

However, volunteers cannot easily know everything about the people who want to adopt a dog. They cannot tell someone’s job, personal background, or financial situation just by looking at them. It may also feel uncomfortable or rude to ask very direct questions about someone’s private information. Because of this, volunteers usually try to ask questions in a more indirect way. For example, they might ask about the person’s daily life, whether they have owned pets before, or how much time they can spend with the dog. But it is still hard to be completely sure about someone’s true intentions. Sadly, some people may lie in order to adopt a dog. In the worst cases, they might use the dog for illegal activities or treat the animal in cruel ways. This is something that many volunteers worry about, especially when they already feel emotionally connected to the dogs and want them to have a safe and happy life.
